The European Melamine Producers Association is aware that ECHA has received a dossier from the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety, proposing a harmonised classification (CLH) for melamine as a carcinogen Category 2 and a STOT1 RE (substance with a ‘Specific Target Organ Toxicity 1 Repeat Exposure’). The public consultation for the proposal started on 9 December 2019 and will run for 60 calendar days until 7 February 2020. The consultation and further information on the dossier can be found here.

EMPA is committed to safeguard the interest of the melamine industry and its users. We are currently conducting a thorough review of the BAuA proposal and intend to submit a detailed response to the ECHA public consultation. EMPA is dedicated to working with ECHA, and other EU institutions, Member State authorities and wider stakeholders to ensure our relevant and factual scientific arguments are understood and taken into account during the CLH process.
